Horses have always played an important part in Michigan’s economy and culture. Horses were essential in developing the state’s agriculture, logging, and other industries. Peter the Great, born in 1895, was one of Michigan’s most celebrated horses. He was owned by Kalamazoo businessman Daniel D. Streeter. Peter the Great put in an outstanding performance against the best horses of the day at the Kentucky Futurity. This event was widely recognized as the leading trotting race in the USA. The young horse came a close second after the favorite. Pretty soon, the “colt from Kalamazoo” was a popular winner and sire of other successful trotters. The stallion, Amidore, also plays an important part in Michigan history. In 1932, W.K. Kellogg gave him to Michigan State University, thus establishing the internationally-famous Arabian horse breeding program.
