Horses in Arkansas

The economic impact of the horse industry in Arkansas

The number of horses in Arkansas is currently around 160,000. It is estimated that around sixty thousand households have horses. In all, the total contribution of horses to the state economy is over $3.5 billion. The racing industry makes a major contribution to the state, particularly through Thoroughbred breeding programs. Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs is the state’s premier racetrack, hosting seasonal races and other activities. Events, such as the State Championship Horse Show, believed to be the largest open show west of the Mississippi River, also attract large numbers of competitors and spectators. Heritage events, such as the annual Clinton Chuckwagon Races, draw huge crowds of over 20,000 people. It’s estimated that the state’s 300 outdoor equestrian facilities and 15 indoor arenas are also an important part of the equine economy. These provide income through numerous shows, parades, and other activities. The University of Arkansas is also an important contributor, through its popular equine studies courses.

The history of horses in Arkansas

Many have heard of the well-known lawman Wyatt Earp and his role in the shoot-out at the OK Corral. What is less known is that he was indicted for horse theft in the town of Van Buren, Arkansas. He stole two horses from James Keyes and should have stood trial for this crime. However, he jumped bail and never made it into court to face the charges! Thoroughbred horses and racing have always played an important part in the history of Arkansas. In 1904, John Condon, Dan Stuart, Louis Cella, and Charles Cella founded the Oaklawn Jockey Club. The Oaklawn racetrack represented a major investment in the early 1900s. A famous architect from Chicago, Zachary Taylor Davis, was brought in to design the grandstand. This glass-enclosed seating area could accommodate 1500 spectators and was also heated, an innovation at this time. It cost $500,000. The Arkansas Derby draws some of the cream of the Thoroughbred racing world and is viewed as a preparatory race for America’s prestigious Triple Crown.

Horse associations in Arkansas

Oaklawn Park is home not only to an internationally famous racecourse but also to the Arkansas Thoroughbred Breeders’ & Horsemen’s Association. Founded in 1961, the ATBHA is the official breed registry for Thoroughbreds bred in Arkansas. It’s also home to the Arkansas Quarter Horse Association.

Disciplines in Arkansas

While racing and showing are popular activities in Arkansas, most horses (42%) are kept by recreational riders. Showing horses represent about 29% of the state’s equines, with gaited horses being popular breeds. 9% of the state’s equines are involved in horse racing. The remaining fifth covers working equines and service equines. Barrel racing is also a popular sport in this state. Equine-assisted therapy and related activities are increasing in Arkansas.

He was successful in some of the most prestigious events in the US, including the Brooklyn Handicap, the Met Mile, the Jockey Club Gold Cup, and the Santa Anita Handicap. In 2016, a beautiful black Friesian stallion named Frederik the Great became a TV and internet superstar not just in Arkansas, but around the world.
