Gouda is the kind of young mare that already has enough real-world experience to make her interesting, while still having all of the future ahead of her. RH Docs Pure Willow is a 2022 registered Appaloosa mare standing 15 hands, with a gorgeous bay snow cap pattern, plenty of shape and substance, and a pedigree that gives her some legitimate credentials as a performance prospect.
On the top side, Gouda is by Docs Pure Colonel, whose sire is Colonel Rey Lena. Colonel Rey Lena was a son of the legendary Doc O’Lena and out of Christy Jay, the same mare who produced Colonel Freckles. Colonel Rey Lena earned money in the reining pen and was an NRHA Open Reserve Champion, while Doc O’Lena went on to become one of the most influential names behind cutting, reining and working cow horses. It is old-school, proven cow-horse breeding, and Gouda is already showing that those genetics did not miss her.
She has been started on cattle and has been lightly sorted and boxed, enough to give her an understanding of a cow without drilling her or taking the freshness out of a young horse. She wants to follow one, is comfortable working in close quarters, and has the balance and footwork to make us particularly excited about her as a rope horse prospect. With her build, mind and cow-bred foundation, I could easily see her going on to make a head, heel, breakaway, ranch versatility or working cow horse.
What really separates Gouda from a lot of young prospects, though, is the amount of country she has already seen. She has been ridden extensively through the Allegheny Mountains and North Carolina, where she has learned to navigate steep grades, uneven footing, water, woods and real trail terrain. She is exceptionally sure-footed and confident about where she puts herself, and those miles have given her an education that is very difficult to manufacture inside an arena.
She is comfortable riding away from home, handles changing terrain without making a production out of it, and has the type of foundation that should translate equally well into ranch work, performance events or simply being a very nice using horse.
Gouda also gets along well with other horses and is easy to keep in a herd situation. She has a sensible disposition and has been given the time and exposure to develop into a well-rounded young mare rather than being rushed toward one particular job.
At four years old, she is at a great point for someone wanting a horse they can continue to develop and ultimately finish their own way. She already has mountain miles, cattle exposure and a solid start underneath her, but she has not been overused or over-specialized.
Between her bay snow cap coloring, Doc O’Lena/Colonel Rey Lena influence, cattle start and extensive outside miles, Gouda offers considerably more than just a pretty set of papers. She has the makings of a very useful performance mare, and we think she would be an especially exciting prospect for someone wanting to develop a good rope or cow horse.
