Some horses have fancy resumes. Cowboy Carl doesn’t need one—he’d rather just show up, go to work, and make you wonder why every horse can’t be this easy.
Meet Cowboy Carl, an 11–12-year-old bay gelding standing just under 15.1 hands tall. Don’t let his height fool you. This guy is built like a brick house, with that old-school foundation Quarter Horse build everyone wishes they could still find. He’s stout, strong, and made to comfortably carry riders of all shapes and sizes.
If you’re searching for the horse you can throw your husband, wife, kids, friends, or neighbors on without a second thought, congratulations…your search may officially be over.
Cowboy Carl is one of those rare horses that doesn’t require a lengthy owner’s manual. There are no surprises, no silly habits, and no “well, sometimes he…” stories. You climb on, point him where you want to go, and enjoy the ride. It’s really that simple.
Carl is a true ranch horse through and through. He’s spent countless hours doing everyday ranch work and knows exactly what a day’s work looks like. When the work is finished, he’s just as happy loading up for a camping trip and hitting hundreds of miles of trails. Mountains, woods, rough country—it doesn’t matter. He’s been there, done that, and is always ready to go again.
Under saddle, Carl is exactly what most people spend years looking for. He has an easy one-hand neck rein, side passes willingly, has a smooth, comfortable trot, lopes right off without any funny business, picks up both leads with ease, and comes back with a solid “whoa.” He’s soft, uncomplicated, and confidence inspiring for riders of every experience level.
He’s just as enjoyable in the arena as he is out on the trail. Around our place he’s become the official volunteer for all of our questionable ideas. Tarps? Sure. Giant balls? Why not. Flags? Pool noodles? Bring them on. Carl simply sighs and says, “Is this what we’re doing today?” before quietly going along with whatever adventure we’ve dreamed up.
Cowboy Carl has a sweet, easygoing personality that makes him a pleasure to spend time with. He’s the first to meet you at the gate but still remembers his manners. He enjoys attention without becoming pushy, stands quietly while you’re grooming or tacking up, and is the kind of horse you actually enjoy hanging around, even when you’re not riding.
He has become one of our favorite “guest horses.” Need a dependable lesson horse? Carl can do that. Want a safe trail partner for the family? He’s your guy. Or, like we do around here, just slap your husband on Carl and say, “Let’s go riding!” We promise he’ll take good care of him.
On the ground, Carl is every bit the gentleman he is under saddle. He has excellent manners, stands quietly for the veterinarian and farrier, loads and hauls with ease, ties patiently, gets along well with other horses, and is respectful whether he’s turned out in the pasture or relaxing in his stall.
Cowboy Carl comes with a current veterinary health exam, current Coggins, and a fresh set of front shoes. (Around our place in the forest, those rocky trails have a way of wearing them out!)
Please don’t skip his video. We think it tells Carl’s story better than words ever could and shows exactly why everyone who rides him comes back with a smile.
If you think Cowboy Carl could be the partner you’ve been searching for, we’d love to visit with you. We are happy to answer any questions, schedule an appointment to meet him, and help coordinate shipping anywhere in the country.
Good horses teach you how to ride. Great horses remind you why you fell in love with horses in the first place. Cowboy Carl is one of the great ones.
