After the scandal surrounding Annika Schleu at the 2021 Olympics show jumping will be dropped from the modern pentathlon and replaced by an obstacle discipline.

The riding in the modern pentathlon is to be replaced in the future by an obstacle discipline as the world federation UIPM announced. No details are known yet. A commission selected two disciplines from 60 proposals. These are to be tested in a test phase at the end of June, after the World Cup in Ankara (Turkey).

In the Modern Pentathlon the athletes compete in the following disciplines so far:

  • Pistol shooting
  • Epee fencing
  • Swimming
  • Cross-country running
  • Show jumping

During the show jumping competition at the 2021 Olympic Games, athlete Annika Schleu and trainer Kim Raisner were accused of inappropriate handling of the horse. Schleu’s horse did not want to enter the course, she tried to bring it back into the course with a whip and spurs. The trainer asked her to hit it and gave the horse a fist bump.

2024: the last time with riding

This is the reason why it leads to the redesign of the pentathlon. 2024 will be the last time the Olympics will be held with horseback riding. Because Annika Schleu had caused a big stir and heavy criticism. The new discipline should be sustainable, inspire the youth and secure the future of the sport. Because the Modern Pentathlon has now been part of the Olympic Games for over 100 years.
