Wow, what a bittersweet moment!
This is one of those horses that we are incredibly proud and honored to offer, but if we’re being completely honest, there will absolutely be some tears shed when this boy eventually loads up and heads down the road. Some horses come into your life, teach you something, do their job, and move along. And then there are the ones that quietly work their way into your heart and become part of your family. Poncho is one of those horses.
Poncho is a 4 year old AQHA registered gelding by the name VR Iorical Ruger, standing almost right at 15 hands tall, and if you could put an old man’s soul into a young horse, it would be him. Poncho may only be four, but he carries himself with a maturity and quiet confidence that you simply don’t find in every young horse. He has the kind of disposition that makes you forget his age the minute you swing a leg over him.He is the horse that wants to be with his people. Whether that’s standing beside you while you work around the barn, hanging out with you on a quiet afternoon, or carrying you down the trail with the whole family along for the ride, Poncho genuinely enjoys being part of whatever you’re doing. He has an exceptionally sweet, affectionate personality and absolutely loves attention. He’s the kind of horse who will happily stand there with his nose in your pocket just because he wants to be near you. He is, without a doubt, a lover-boy. And perhaps one of the things we love most about Poncho is just how much life he has already experienced at such a young age.
Over the last several months, I have personally trail ridden Poncho alongside my 8 year old daughter, and together we have taken him through Kentucky, Missouri, and Oklahoma. He’s been exposed to different environments, different trails, different scenery, different footing, and all the little things that can make a young horse stop and think. Instead of letting those things get the best of him, Poncho has consistently shown us that he has a wonderfully level head. He has been tracked and pushed on cattle in the wide-open fields of Oklahoma, and he has spent time navigating some genuinely rough and challenging terrain. He has crossed bridges, water, logs, rocks, uneven ground, and obstacles, and he takes it all in stride. He doesn’t need to be convinced that something is okay or require a big production to get through an obstacle. He has the confidence to look, process, and go on with his job. That’s what makes Poncho so special to us. He isn’t a horse that has simply been exposed to a few obstacles in an arena and called trail broke. He has been out in the real world. He’s seen the sights, experienced the miles, and been put in situations where a horse has to think for himself. And through all of it, he’s continued to show us that wonderful, quiet disposition that makes him such a pleasure to have around. Poncho is safe, sensible, and extremely forgiving. He is the type of gelding that can be enjoyed by the whole family. He has been around and ridden by my daughter, and watching the two of them together has been one of the highlights of having him here. There is just something incredibly reassuring about putting a young rider with a young horse and seeing the horse take care of them. He is not a hot, flighty horse looking for a reason to make a bad decision. He has more of a “well, alright, let’s see what you want me to do” attitude. He will absolutely pick up his feet when necessary and has plenty of go when asked, but he does so respectfully and with a good mind. He has that wonderful combination of being willing without being pushy, confident without being cocky, and young without acting immature. On the ground, Poncho is just as enjoyable as he is under saddle. He is easy to catch, bathe, loads and unloads, stands tied, stands in cross-ties, and is good for the vet and farrier. He is the kind of horse that you can actually enjoy owning—not one that requires a project every time you walk into the barn. He is an extremely easy keeper and has been kept current on his routine care, including dental work, Coggins, farrier work, and deworming. There is no doubt in our minds that Poncho has a whole lot of life ahead of him and the potential to become someone’s once-in-a-lifetime horse. He’s already seen the sights and been places that most four-year-olds haven’t. He’s crossed state lines, traveled miles, ridden through unfamiliar country, worked cattle, navigated difficult terrain, carried an 8-year-old, and learned to trust his rider. Now, more than anything, we want to find the person who will take all of those good experiences and give him the forever home he deserves.
Because that’s the part that makes this sale bittersweet.
We aren’t offering Poncho because there’s anything wrong with him. Quite the opposite. We are offering him because we believe he’s too good of a horse not to share with someone who will love and appreciate him as much as we do. We have had the privilege of putting some miles and experiences on this young gelding, and now we’re ready to help him find the person whose life he’s supposed to become a part of. Poncho is the kind of horse that you can imagine your whole family enjoying. The kind you can load up for a weekend of camping and trail riding. The kind you can take somewhere new without wondering what he’s going to think about everything. The kind that can spend an afternoon carrying you down a quiet trail and then stand in the pasture afterward with his nose in your pocket asking for scratches.
He’s been a favorite here, and I have a feeling he’s going to be a favorite wherever he ends up.
Poncho sells with our guarantee, and we are happy to discuss exactly what that entails with serious prospective buyers. PPEs are welcome at the buyer’s expense. We are also more than happy to help with shipping arrangements and make the transition as easy as possible for his new owner.
Now we’re just looking for the person who will make sure he knows how special he is, too.
Don’t hesitate to reach out. Let’s have a conversation about our favorite guy, Poncho. We would love to tell you more about him, answer any questions you may have, and help you decide if this sweet boy might be the next member of your family.
