The Ukraine war: thousands of horses in danger

The war in Ukraine claims many victims. People’s lives are in danger and they have to flee. But animals are also affected. People try to take their animals with them, but many are forced to be left behind.

Currently, 100,000 horses in Ukraine are without adequate supplies. The stables are bombed and due the missing food the animals can’t be supplied. Even in the future there seems to be no improvement. Because many stables with agricultural machines, which are needed for hay production, were also destroyed.

Only a few horses like the stallions Cornet Obolensky and Comme il faut could be rescued on a private way. Many others had to be left behind. This was also the case for horse owner Julia Molokova. She had to leave her five horses behind. She saw the only chance for their survival in releasing them before they were bombed on the farm. But the good news: the horses were picked up and taken care of.

How the Equine World is helping

A collection center for the rescued horses has already been set up in Poland. In order to protect the domestic stock from epidemics, quarantine is compulsory here. Therefore, many animals are still waiting for rescue at the Ukrainian border. Despite the desperate situation, the quarantine is necessary. Most Ukrainian animals have neither the necessary vaccinations nor chips or papers.

Further, money is being collected in the world by riders and equestrian associations to help the animals in Ukraine. Relief funds, groups like “Help Ukraine Horses” on Facebook and the fundraising gala at the World Cup Final in Leipzig (Germany) are collecting relief supplies and drawing attention to the desperate situation.
