A policeman and a horse were injured when football fans threw objects at the police before the start of the match between Preston North End and Blackpool.

There was a large police presence around the Peepdale Stadium before the game, as 19,000 people were expected to attend the match.

Before kick-off, three Lancashire Police horses were pelted with smoke grenades by fans. One of the horses was injured on the leg.

At another point, a policeman sitting on a horse was hit on the head with a pint pot. Fortunately, the policeman was wearing a helmet during the incident.

Eight people were arrested that evening for crimes such as drunkenness, disorderly conduct and assault.
