Have you always wanted to make your own hoof dressing and save some money? In the following article, we will show you how to create a great hoof dressing for your favorite horse. But be aware that this hoof dressing is not the same as a human body lotion.

What should you pay attention to when using hoof oil/hoof dressing?

In general, hoof care products should not be overused. However, there is nothing wrong with using them once or twice a week. A hoof dressing is used to seal the horse’s hoof and prevent water from passing through. Hoof dressing should therefore be used to repel or trap moisture or to protect the hoof, especially in winter, from salts such as road salt. Of course, there is nothing wrong with using it for beauty effects, e.g. for shows. However, hoof dressing should not be used daily!

Ingredients for your Hoof Dressing:

  • bay leaves (dried & fresh)
  • olive oil (about 1 liter)

How it works:

Hoof dressing or hoof oil can be put together relatively easily. To do so, add the bay leaves together with the olive oil in a sealable container and close it. Now, unfortunately, patience is required because the mixture should rest for about 40 days. After, you can drain the oil and use it as hoof care.

In summary, we can advise you to use your hoof dressing particulary in spring and winter during the wetter seasons, so that only little moisture can penetrate the hoof. We wish you a lot of fun in trying this out!
