This year marks the 50th edition of the prestigious CSIO5* Spruce Meadows Masters in Calgary, and Wednesday’s opening competitions delivered top-class sport from the start. As riders from around the globe gathered in Alberta, expectations were high – and the first results did not disappoint.
Vogel dominates the Cardel Homes Cup
Germany’s Richard Vogel, current European champion and world no. 4, opened his week in style by winning the CSIO5* 1.55 m Cardel Homes Cup aboard the impressive Phenyo van het Keysersbos. The pair delivered a lightning-fast jump-off in 38.93 seconds, edging out Swiss rider Steve Guerdat (Albfuehren’s Iashin Sitte) and fellow German Sophie Hinners (Iron Dames Singclair). “From now on it is only going to get bigger,” Vogel said confidently after his ride.
Jordan Coyle opens strong in the Telus Cup
Earlier in the day, Ireland’s Jordan Coyle made a perfect start in the CSIO5* 1.50 m Telus Cup with his mount For Gold. Their time of 57.16 seconds was enough to hold off Sanne Thijssen (Cupcake Z) and Canada’s Kara Chad (Corinna Z). Despite his win, Coyle noted he wasn’t pushing his horse to the limit: “That’s not him going fast at all… I thought someone would be faster.” His aim: secure qualification for Sunday’s Grand Prix.
What’s next at the Masters
The highlight of the team competition, the BMO Nations’ Cup, is set for Saturday and will see top nations face off in one of the most prestigious events of the season. On Sunday, the week concludes with the iconic CPKC ‘International’ Grand Prix presented by Rolex – a Major of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping. With strong form from riders like Vogel and Coyle, the stakes are high and the excitement is building.
