Grounds of horse breeding

.

Horse breeding is understood as the planned mating of horses with the aim of maintaining or improving certain breed characteristics. This is also accompanied by the improvement of health, as well as performance ability, such as rideability. Depending on the breed, this breeding goal formulates different characteristics that the breeding horses should have. Criteria for such a breeding goal must be objectively and accurately determinable, hereditary and of economic importance. The fundamentals of the breeding objective form the basis for conformation evaluation and performance testing.

A breeding association is a breeding organization recognized under German animal welfare law. Each breeding association is recognized by the state and sets the guidelines for the breeding program. A breeder is the owner of the broodmares at the time of covering.

Special test for stallions: the stallion licensing

.

The licensing is the selection decision for the registration of stud stallions in the stud book of a breed association. In the case of a licensed stallion, particular attention is paid to the external appearance including the movement, the breeding suitability and health, and the results of other performance tests.

Mare performance test and foal championship

.

The mare performance test - or broodmare test - is offered to all mares in a breeding population. Experienced breeders as well as young breeders thus have the opportunity to have their broodmares evaluated objectively and to compare them with each other. The broodmare test is not a prerequisite for registration in the studbook. However, the test must be passed in order for a warmblood mare to receive the title of State Premium Mare. There are two ways for mares to participate in performance tests: Field tests and station tests.

The German Foal Championships has established itself as a top event. Here, breeders of show jumpers, dressage horses and riding ponies from all breeding areas and federal states are given the opportunity to participate in one or more qualifications in their breeding area.
