Study Researches Effects Of Horse-Human Bond"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<strong>Researchers have studied the impact of human-horse bonds on decisions regarding equestrian care, ownership change and end-of-life decisions.\u00a0 The study revealed that some owners hide certain costs from loved ones, and that first-time owners feel guilty when it&#8217;s time to say goodbye.<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Many people view their horses as<strong> best friends, family members, buddies and trusted confidantes.<\/strong> But sometimes, their <strong>bank account<\/strong> seems to be drained by the<strong> constant care that horses need.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Different to dogs, who are considered <strong>companions<\/strong>, or livestock, which have a <strong>production role<\/strong>, horses fall into<strong> both categories<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>So how do you put a price on that?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With time, horses and their handlers become very <strong>bonded<\/strong>. This can lead to <strong>challenges<\/strong> with decision making when it comes to <strong>health, welfare and finances.<\/strong> The <strong>horse-human relationship<\/strong> is so <strong>complex<\/strong>, that decisions are often <strong>emotionally charged &#8211; especially decisions about euthanasia.<\/strong> To explore these bonds, and how they can affect different decisions, researchers surveyed nearly <strong>1,000<\/strong> <strong>horse owners<\/strong> regarding their relationship with their horses and how they approached decisions regarding <strong>care, change of ownership and end of life.<\/strong>\u00a0 They also performed one-on-one interviews with 11 owners to get more detailed insights.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Surveys showed that <strong>93% of owners considered their horses as family members.<\/strong> Many owners described <strong>big financial investments,<\/strong>\u00a0and even stated that they spend<strong> more time with their horses than their spouses.<\/strong> In certain situations owners even <strong>hid financial costs from loved ones and family members<\/strong>. Many owners <strong>sacrifice<\/strong> their own <strong>dreams<\/strong> and <strong>goals<\/strong> to keep paying for a <strong>loved horses retiremen<\/strong>t. They often <strong>don&#8217;t<\/strong> consider taking on a second horse after the first has retired.<\/p>\n<p>Especially <strong>first-time owners<\/strong> are at risk of experiencing <strong>guilt<\/strong> and spending <strong>excessive amounts of money<\/strong> to care for retired horses.
