Dogs, cats and horses. More precisely: miniature horses. This sounds strange, but there are a number of reasons for it.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><b>States<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, everything is always <\/span><b>a little bigger <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than we&#8217;re used to over here. The highways, the prairie, the ambience &#8211; and the <\/span><b>animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are allowed in the <\/span><b>passenger cabin of airplanes.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Lufthansa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, only allows <\/span><b>cats <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> dogs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the cabin that fit into boxes measuring no more than 55x40x23 centimeters. The boxes must not exceed a total weight of <\/span><b>8 kilograms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A miniature American horse would not fit in there. They easily weigh <\/span><b>70 kilograms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or more. The mini-horses <\/span><b>were once bred<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the <\/span><b>amusement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of European aristocrats. Today, they are used in the <\/span><b>U.S.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as <\/span><b>&#8220;service animals&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>&#8220;emotional support animals,&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> i.e., companion animals for people who need assistance &#8211; in whatever form. For the <\/span><b>blind<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, they can <\/span><b>serve instead of an assistance dog<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As reported by the New York Times, the U.S. Department of Transportation has now decided that<\/span><b> horses of this breed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> must be considered by airlines <\/span><b>on U.S. domestic flights<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; just like dogs or cats.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Flying with miniature horse<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Requirement:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They are <\/span><b>approved assistance animals <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; i.e. animals that are used as a therapeutic measure. The <\/span><b>tweet above<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows what that might look like in reality. The picture was taken as early as 2004 and recirculated most recently in connection with reporting about flying mini-horses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone wishing to travel with their odd-hoofed &#8220;service animal&#8221; should let the airline know in advance. Often, <\/span><b>passengers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>mini-horses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are then placed on seats that have a<\/span><b> little more legroom,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as one blind woman described to the New York Times. She has flown several times with her horse <\/span><b>&#8220;Cali&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Among other functions, she says, <\/span><b>Cali is trained<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to do its business in a <\/span><b>plastic bag.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> At the airport, she asks someone to take her to the ladies&#8217; room. There, Cali relieves herself in the bag on command. She then flushes the contents down the toilet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Rules regarding assistance animals<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the USA, the number of <\/span><b>assistance animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has increased significantly in recent years. Owners have to <\/span><b>prove<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a doctor&#8217;s or therapist&#8217;s <\/span><b>certificate <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that they really need their animal for <\/span><b>physical<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>emotional support<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Most of the time, these are dogs, but very <\/span><b>inventive pet owners <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have also tried to <\/span><b>claim insects <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><b>reptiles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as assistance animals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How <\/span><b>serious the certification<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is in individual cases cannot always be clearly verified.
