A recent research<\/strong>, financed by RSPCA Australia and published in the journal Animals<\/a>, examined the “ability of horse skin<\/strong> to perceive pain<\/strong> when compared to human skin<\/strong>.” The study’s findings show that when being whipped<\/strong>, people and horses experience pain<\/strong> in essentially the same ways<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to co-author Professor Paul McGreevy,<\/strong> a professor at the University of Sydney, “what’s important is what lies between dermis and epidermis, and that’s where the nerve endings<\/strong> are found. We were interested in the thickness of the base layer of the skin, which is called the dermis<\/strong>, and also the outer layer, called the epidermis.<\/strong>” He added, that it is the first research<\/strong> of its kind ever conducted.<\/span><\/p>\n

Research Process & Findings<\/b><\/h2>\n

Skin from 10 humans<\/strong> and 20 thoroughbred<\/strong> or thoroughbred-type horses was used to analyse the differences in skin structure and nerve supply<\/strong>. The study focused on the region of skin on a horse’s rump<\/strong> that is frequently whipped<\/strong> during a race.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There was “no<\/strong> substantial difference<\/strong> between humans and horses in either the concentration of nerve endings<\/strong> or in the thickness of this layer<\/strong>,” according to research from Australia’s Taronga Conservation Society led by veterinary pathologist Dr. Lydia Tong.<\/span><\/p>\n

They discovered that although horses<\/strong> have generally thicker skin<\/strong>, this does not shield<\/strong> them from pain<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even though the horse’s dermis<\/strong>, which is located underneath the epidermis, is substantially thicker<\/strong> compared to humans, the thickness of the horse’s dermis cannot play<\/strong> a big role in skin sensitivity<\/strong> despite the fact that it may tolerate forceful blows better than human dermis, the survey revealed.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the findings, this suggests that when it comes to pain perception<\/strong>, horse skin is barely distinguishable from human skin. Which leads to the conclusion that a thicker area<\/strong> of the horses\u2019 skin does not safeguard<\/strong> from the pain<\/strong> caused by a whip hit.<\/strong> The essential anatomical elements<\/strong> that allow humans and horses to feel pain in the skin<\/strong> are the same<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Researchers believe that these data must update<\/strong> previous hypotheses concerning the ‘thick-skinned’<\/strong> horse’s ability to feel pain<\/strong> in comparison to humans.<\/span><\/p>\n
